Finish damage on doors
What the damage can mean
Scratches, chips, worn lacquer, flaking paint and cloudy or cracked finishes are not all the same problem. On a solid timber door a local refinish may be possible; on veneer, composite skins, factory-coated metal or specialist finishes the repair method can be more limited.
Repair, refinish or replace
A local repair makes sense when the substrate is sound and the finish can be matched reasonably. If water has entered the material, an edge has broken away, the face has delaminated or the original factory finish cannot be reproduced locally, replacement may give a cleaner result.
