Timber Door Maintenance — practical planning
Routine maintenance starts with the condition of the door rather than a fixed calendar. Check the bottom edge, joints, glazing beads, seals, threshold, exposed end grain and areas where water can sit.
Oil, hardwax oil, stain, lacquer and paint are different finish systems. A product that suits one solid timber door may be unsuitable for a veneer, engineered door or a factory-finished external door. Manufacturer instructions and compatibility come first.
If a timber door has swollen, split, discoloured or started rubbing, the cause should be understood before material is removed or a new finish is applied.
