Replacing a Door Without Replacing the Frame

A sound frame can often stay

If the frame is straight, secure and suitable for the new door, replacing only the leaf can reduce unnecessary work. The existing hinge recesses and latch position still need to be considered.

Check before keeping the frame

• Frame is firmly fixed
• No serious rot, splitting or movement
• Opening is reasonably square
• New door can match the required size
• Hinge positions can be reused or altered cleanly
• Latch and handle position can be accommodated
• Floor clearance is suitable

A new door does not automatically fit an old frame

Even nominally similar doors can differ in thickness, edge construction or dimensions. The new leaf may need careful trimming and hinge preparation to fit the existing opening.

Replace the frame when it is the real problem

If the frame is damaged, badly out of alignment or unsuitable for the intended door, keeping it can create more work and a poorer result than replacing the complete set.
