Measure the opening you actually have

For a door-only replacement, record the existing leaf and the frame opening. For a new frame or complete set, measure the structural or finished opening that the new frame must fit.

Measurements to record

Width at more than one height
Height at more than one position
Frame depth or wall thickness
Finished floor level on both sides
Existing door thickness
Hinge side and opening direction
Threshold dimensions where present

Do not assume the opening is square

Older frames can lean, twist or narrow from top to bottom. Multiple measurements reveal whether the opening is consistent and whether adjustment or a custom approach may be needed.

Photos make measurements easier to understand

A photo of the whole opening plus close-ups showing the tape measure, hinges and threshold helps put the numbers in context. Final fitting measurements should still be confirmed where precision is critical.
